Servicing & general inspection is a must for the classic motorcyclist who doesn't wish to encounter the inconvenience & embarrassment of a breakdown. However even the most thorough of us can end up stuck in the middle of nowhere, with a flat tyre or broken chain, A basic knowledge of your machines maintenance procedures can help reduce the risk of other problems. Even if you are not mechanically minded I recommend that you read through the maintenance procedures as some of the more frequent ones are quite simple & only take a few minutes to perform.

Maintainance

Every month or 1000 miles

  1. Engine oil level check & top up if necessary
  2. Check tyre pressures & adjust if necessary
  3. Check lighting & horn operation
  4. Check tightness of all nuts & bolts

Every 3 month or 1500 miles

  1. Change engine oil when engine is warm
  2. Check battery electrolyte level

Every 6 month or 3000 miles

  1. Change oil filter
  2. Clean adjust or replace spark plugs
  3. Clean adjust or replace contact breakers & lubricate cam
  4. Check ignition timing
  5. Check & adjust valve clearances cold
  6. Adjust cam chain
  7. Clean air filter element & drain tube (more often in dusty conditions)
  8. Check clean & adjust carburettors if necessary
  9. Examine lubricate & adjust throttle cable
  10. Examine lubricate & adjust clutch cable
  11. Clean fuel filter (drain tank & remove fuel tap)
  12. Check fuel lines for cracks etc
  13. Check drive sprockets for wear & chain tension, adjust if necessary.
  14. Check & adjust wheel alignment
  15. Check brake linings for wear & adjust in necessary
  16. Check brake linkage & hose for cracks or leaks, lubricate linkage
  17. Check wheels for true running, loose spokes etc
  18. Check operation of front & rear suspension
  19. Grease swinging arm pivot & check for slackness
  20. Check stand operation

Every 12 m
onth or 6000 miles

  • Remove sump & clean oil strainer
  • Change air filter element (more often in dusty conditions)
  • Drain & refill front forks
  • Adjust steering head bearings if necessary
  • Check front & rear wheel bearings
Note:- When doing a 3 month service also do a 1 month service,

When doing a 6 month service also do a 3 & 1 month service When doing a 12 month service also do a 6, 3 & 1 month service

Above all lubrication is a must for long life, change the engine oil regularly. At least once a year. If you are laying the bike up for winter, it's best to change the oil before hand, as used oil can cause erosion to bearings etc.

I would also recommend to strip clean & grease the front brake caliper pivot pin which is bolted to the front left fork, this can seize causing drag & reducing brake perfomance & overall performance.

Note:- I advise against fitting LED & HID bulbs as they can cause various problems, and detract from the originality of the bike, the excepton being an upgrade to a Halogen headlight bulb of the same or similar rating & colour.

Halogen conversion bulb left, produces a brighter whiter light than the standard bulb, right.
